Bird Names put cool points on the board!

Bird Names is one of a number of sick musical recording artists from Chicago who make the cool, lo-fi kind of music that is the current Millionaire preference. I came across them by going from link to link on another Chicago band, I Need Sleep's myspace ( http://www.myspace.com/ineedsleep). Myspace is my favorite way of finding bands other than the Hype Machine (http://hypem.com.com). Here's some things I asked Bird Names and some songs and some links.

VYM: Why does bird names refuse technology?

Bird Names: the spectrum of luddism spans our membership diversely. probably for whatever ideology we might spin around the tendency (the would-be greater truth of the old ways, say) the refusal would be caused by petty human things, like the rigidity of habitus and being cheap. humanity's profound dearth of wisdom testifies against its warranting the increased agency and (would-be) freedom promised by technology.

as far as recording, the limitations of recording on a fostex cassette 4-track are real happy because they lead through particularities of sound more conjured than willed. can you really dip your hand in the digital ore, and craft exactly that which you would? accident, experimentation, a blindly felt wall keeping out a wilderness of freedoms: thanks for them.


VYM: Why is bird names fun instead of serious?

Bird Names: sand is a metaphor for stars. matter is made of fun. seriousness is death. etc.


VYM: What will bird names do next?

Bird Names: we're going to keep at the lite industries that make a band: playing lurky music shows in unnoticed chicago places, collaborating, making some albums for unsound records (which should be subtly more available than anything else we've done). also there'll be some climbing about on the caverns inside, figuring and wishing, trying to divine how to be decent people, or artists, or just more sufferable company. if you're reading this and have designs for a band in your life, let's do talk.
